Luke 23: 35-43

“The” King

This King is surrounded by many “kings”. Let us look at them.

First, we have “kings” of higher authority, the top officials of the land whose only word to Jesus is ridicule. The Jewish leaders made fun of Jesus who hangs on the cross helpless and weakest. We in ourselves have self-made “kings” of this kind. We belittle the helpless and the powerless. We ignore others except ourselves. We as the greatest, always!

Second “kings” are the soldiers, the strong-armed protectors of many laws. “Cheap wine is for a cheap man” is their nickname for Jesus. The “King of the Jews” is just a label hanging above his head, but the real man is hanging down towards the ground. We have this “soldier-attitude” of putting down people whom we know as just very weak. They can always be defeated anyway, an underdog,  useless and no sweat at all!

The third “king” is the “hanging” criminal. Even in jail, perhaps he holds the position of being the “mayor” among the inmates or the most arrogant among them.  He used to say orders just like this one: “Save yourself and us!” Even with utmost humiliation, the “criminal” in us holds position of pride in our hearts. We crave for that position because of our sinfulness.

But, “The” King is different! He is dying out of Love, and the criminal nearest to his heart knows this! In the heart the only throne is “nearness” and nothing else! “The” King is loving not of power, not of strength, not of pride, but simply pure Love. Love at its best in dying on the Cross, giving Life to the fullest, and giving paradise for the one who is drawn nearer, a criminal who suddenly became a friend and companion- a sinner turned saint in a heart to Heart pain and glory!

We have in us a lot of “self-invented” kings. Let us get rid of them. But the real one is “The” King who lives and reigns forever in the throne of our hearts! Get nearer…
